House Toland of Ghost Hill is a Dornish noble house sworn to Sunspear, one of the Martells' principal bannermen. Its seat is Ghost Hill.
Their arms depict a green dragon biting it's tail on a field of gold, the dragon symbolizing that time has no beginning and end. Their words are, "The Spirit is Stronger."
History[]
The Tolands successfully resisted the dragons of Aegon the Conqueror during the First Dornish War. The Lord Toland at the time sent out his champion to face Aegon. After Aegon slew the man, he learned that the man was Lord Toland's mad fool, and that Lord Toland himself had escaped. In later days, the Tolands would take a new banner, showing a dragon biting its own tail, with the colors green in gold in memory of the motley of their brave fool. Prior to the dragon, the Toland banners displayed a ghost.
During the War of Seven Kings, House Toland fought for Sunspear under Doran Martell.
Recent History[]
House Toland was involved in the Dornish Rebellions in 356 AC. Elyse Toland, who had wed into one of the rebellious Houses, had her banners raised as the war began. In truth, it was her husband that ruled Ghost Hill at the time. Luceon Gargalen had earned much prestige and more, and the dubious loyalty of Lady Elyse’s men saw to her effectively being deposed for the duration of the conflict.
Ghost Hill was placed under siege during the war, and Nymella Toland, Elyse’s young daughter, sought to surrender the castle. She was restrained and nearly killed after seeking a correspondence with Sunspear. Nymella’s husband, Elan Wells, challenged Ser Luceon to a duel after the last shattered defeat during the rebellion, only to be cut down by his own spears.
Elyse had died by the end of the conflict, most suspect of poisoning. Luceon was sent to Sunspear and tried, then sent to the Wall.
Cora Toland was heir to Ghost Hill in 370 AC when the Second War of Reclamation began. She led their armies alongside Princess Alysanne during the Blue Fork and after. Returning home, House Toland’s spears were bloodied following the war, with less than half of the men returning to their widows.
Since, Cora has been named Seneschal of Sunspear, while her sister rules in Ghost Hill.
